How scoring works

This page explains your readiness number and each of its parts.

Your readiness number

Your readiness number goes from 0 to 100. It shows how ready you are today for a coding interview.

The number has three parts. Coverage adds points. Decay and penalties remove points.

Readiness = Coverage − Decay − Penalties

  • Coverage

The points of the questions that you passed. Each pass adds to it.

  • Decay

The points that you lose on a subtopic after a time without practice.

  • Penalties

The points that you lose when you give up on a question in Interview mode.

What 100 means

Your plan holds the questions that fit your hours per week and your interview date.

Your readiness is 100 when these two conditions are true:

  • You passed each question of your plan at its best approach.
  • No subtopic of your plan has decay.

When you change your hours or your date, your plan changes. Your readiness then uses the new plan.

Levels

Readiness has four levels. A new level starts every 25 points.

Level 4 starts at 100. At Level 4, you are ready for the interview.

  1. Level 125A quarter of your plan
  2. Level 250Half of your plan
  3. Level 375Three quarters of your plan
  4. Level 4100Interview-ready: your whole plan

How you earn points

Each question gives up to 100 points to its subtopic.

A question outside your plan also gives points. A subtopic holds no more than 100 points for each plan question in it.

Most questions have more than one approach. The first approach is the slowest. The last approach is the best.

To earn the points of an approach, do these steps:

  1. Pick the approach that your code reaches.
  2. Run your code. A run is free, and it tells you if your code reaches your pick.
  3. Submit your code. The judge then tests it on a large hidden input.

A pass gives you the points of that approach and of each approach below it. A better approach gives more points.

A submit never gives more than the approach that you picked.

Decay

Decay is the loss of points on a subtopic after a time without practice.

A subtopic without practice loses a small part of its points each day. The loss grows week after week.

Decay has a limit. You keep 30% of the points that you earned, for all time.

A subtopic goes on your Due for revision list when it loses 0.1 points.

To get the points back, pass one question in that subtopic.

Penalties

Penalties apply only in Interview mode. In Regular mode, no action costs points.

In Interview mode, these actions make a pass worth less:

  • A hint
  • A failed submit after the free ones
  • A look at past code older than 24 hours
  • A pass below the approach you picked
  • Time past the allowed limit

A pass that is worth less adds fewer points to your coverage.

A give-up is the only penalty. It removes a few points from your readiness. This cost decays with time.

The forecast

The readiness trend shows a dashed line. This line is your forecast.

The forecast uses your practice days of the last 2 weeks. It stops at the end date of your plan.

If your plan has no end date, the forecast shows the next 4 weeks.

The forecast does not always reach 100. It shows the readiness that your current pace gives you.

To see the forecast for a different pace, do these steps:

  1. Open the Readiness page.
  2. Find Try above the trend.
  3. Select + to add one practice day each week, or − to remove one.
  4. Select the reset button to go back to your pace.
